Varying story methods and types are utilized by journalists in order to tell the story they’re attempting to share with their readers. Each decision by the group of writers and editors tasked with telling a story is made consciously with different goals and intentions of influencing or informing the reader in a variety of ways. In sports journalism, some of the most influential writers are sports columnists. Yet, some of the best work done by sports writers and the aforementioned sports columnists is that of news analysis in the sports journalism world.

Straight news stories are often overlooked and fail…

Herm Edwards is worn out, and Arizona State is, too.

“I need a rest,” the Sun Devil head coach admitted following the last chapter of Arizona State’s 2020 season. “I’m tired. I’m bone tired.”

Despite the NCAA’s football advisory panel waiving the minimum wins threshold before the Pac-12 even began this wacky season, Pac-12 conference commissioner, Larry Scott laid out requirements for bowl qualification in the conference before the West coast’s premier conference began its quest for seven games in seven weeks. Teams needed to achieve a .500 record or better. …

Barred from hitting the physical recruiting trail this year, Arizona State has brought a new approach to the recruiting challenges of 2020. A patient and calculated process set Arizona State up with a three-phase approach. The first phase came to a close Wednesday during the December portion of national signing day.

By no means did the Sun Devils walk away with a full class but by sunset Wednesday evening Herm Edwards and do-it-all assistant coach Antonio Pierce had solidified 10 new faces for the beginning of ASU’s 2021 class.

“This has been our plan,” explained Pierce, who serves as the…

Since the cancelation of the NCAA tournament, we’ve been bombarded by debates surrounding which team would have strung together six straight wins to take home the national title. Without the tournament, different teams, players and coaches have vocalized their belief in it being their year.

In a year where seven different teams spent time at No. 1 in the AP poll, Florida State was never one of them. Still, the Seminoles were declared “national champions by default” in a 37–2 vote in the Florida state senate March 14.

Kentucky head coach John Calipari released a statement expressing belief in what…

Athletic Director Kevin Gerke announced today in a meeting with the girls basketball program in the Performing Arts Center that Matt Shulman will be the next varsity girls basketball head coach at Blue Valley Northwest. During the meeting in the PAC, Gerke told players “I think we’ve got a match made in heaven.”

For the past three years, Shulman has been an assistant coach at Kansas Class 5A power Shawnee Heights for their boys program. The 28-year old will be taking the reins of his first career varsity head coaching gig after stints as an assistant coach at multiple schools…

Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe and Overland Park Police Chief Frank Donchez announced today that the shooting of Blue Valley Northwest junior John Albers on Jan. 20 was justified. The announcement was made during a morning press conference. No criminal charges will be brought against the officer involved in the shooting.

BVNWnews could not reach Albers mother, Sheila Albers, and her attorney for comment today. In an interview with BVNWnews on Feb. 6, Sheila said she did not want to see violence in response to no charges being brought.

“Regardless of what is released,” Sheila said, “I really hope…

Multiple stunts the cheer squad performed at Thursday’s Sweetheart assembly have been ruled illegal by the Kansas State High School Activities Association. Principal Amy Murphy said she believes the violations were accidental.

“I do not believe that the coaches intentionally violated the rules,” Murphy said.

As a result of the illegal stunts, KSHSAA immediately grounded the cheer squad from stunting, jumping and tumbling until further notice. All performances, including the scheduled Sweetheart basketball game performance, and any cheering other than from the sidelines would not be allowed until the investigation from KSHSAA was complete. KSHSAA Assistant…

It wasn’t an unusual sight to find Clayton Custer in the gym during the early hours of the morning, or the latest hours of the night. Everybody has their own Clayton Custer story, there are plenty of them.

For head coach Ed Fritz, it was that time where Custer and Loyola teammate Ben Richardson, Vince Fritz and Kyle Harrison played full-court 2-on-2 in the gym at Blue Valley Northwest on New Year’s Eve during the fifth grade. For Custer’s father Galen, it’s the countless times he would take his youngest son to the gym at Lifetime Fitness at 5 a.m…

Control seemed to be slipping away. Third-and-16. Four minutes and five seconds remaining in a game that Arizona State (6–5, 3–5 Pac-12) led at one point 24–7.

With a 24–21 lead, freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels had the ball in his hands. The Sun Devil signal-caller had just been sacked on the previous down, the Ducks having perfectly covered a play-action pass.

But a play later, with the game on the line, the 18-year-old added to his quickly-growing legacy. …

The Herm Edwards era at Arizona State reached arguably its lowest point Saturday night at the Rose Bowl. The Sun Devils were sloppy and uncomposed, oftentimes showcasing the look of a team relying upon a plethora of freshmen.

Inexperience and youthfulness were expected this year. But for the second straight week, Arizona State looked unprepared for the test ahead. After an 18-point loss at Utah last week — in which ASU was called for 12 penalties totaling 122 yards — the Sun Devils responded with another performance marred by poor execution and self-inflicted mistakes.

“It was more…
